Severus Snape is the potions teacher, and the head of the Slytherin house. But what he really wants to be is the defense against the dark arts teacher. He is only nice to his house, and mean to everybody else. He hates Harry so much that he will do anything to get Harry into trouble.
Snape and Harry's dad didn't like each other when they were in school. Snape saw Lupin go to the school grounds every month, so when Sirius found Snape snooping around, Sirius gave Snape the secret to get past the whomping willow. Sirius was trying to get Snape killed, but Harry's dad, James, saved him. Snape thought James was in on the plan to kill him, so Snape told Dumbledore. Dumbledore bent Snape with metaphors and such until Snape was ready to talk about it. even after a long talk, Snape still hated the potters.
In Harry's first year, Harry thought that Snape was trying to kill him. But Snape actually was trying to save him. still, they hate each other.
In the fourth book Snape and Sirius make up and shake hands with each other.
